AWS Health introduces the version catalog for software lifecycle management

Today, AWS Health introduces the version catalog which provides a centralized source of lifecycle information for software versions across AWS services. The version catalog helps customers move from reactive to proactive management of version upgrades and end-of-support risk. It is available in the AWS Health Dashboard, and customers on Business Support Plus, Enterprise Support, or Unified Operations can use the AWS Health API to integrate lifecycle data into their operational workflows. Customers running applications on AWS need to stay current with software versions to maintain a strong security and operational posture. AWS Health already …

Kubernetes v1.37: DRA Updates

Kubernetes 1.37 is here and Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA) keeps pushing past where it started! This release brings DRA Extended Resource support to GA, a milestone the team has been building toward for three straight releases. Several more features graduate to Beta or GA. A fresh batch of alpha features rounds out the release. I'll dive into what's new for DRA in Kubernetes 1.37! What's stable in 1.37DRA Extended Resource support has graduated to GA. This is the mechanism that lets DRA drivers satisfy requests made through the traditional extended resource API, think example.com/gpu in a Pod spec, without requiring a separate device plug…

AWS Transform announces general availability of Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP support

AWS Transform for migrations adds Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP as a generally available storage target for block storage workloads, alongside Amazon EBS. With AWS Transform, you can now migrate block storage directly to FSx for ONTAP as part of the same migration wave that handles compute and networks, eliminating the need for intermediate storage platforms and separate migration tools. Whether migrating from NetApp ONTAP, other block storage platforms, or VMware environments, your data access patterns and operational processes remain unchanged with FSx for ONTAP. Now your workloads run on a fully managed, production-ready shared storage serv…

Kubernetes v1.37: Scale Workloads to Zero with HorizontalPodAutoscaler

Kubernetes v1.37 includes API support for horizontal autoscaling of workloads down to zero replicas. This feature is now Beta and enabled by default. A HorizontalPodAutoscaler (HPA) that uses a suitable object metric or external metric can now scale a workload to zero replicas, then bring it back when the metric changes. Before v1.37, you needed an add-on or external component, or you had to enable the Alpha feature gate, to scale from zero. It is now part of core Kubernetes. Scaling to zero removes the last idle Pod from workloads such as queue consumers and batch processors. The savings are largest when each Pod reserves expensive resource…

Web Search on Amazon Bedrock is now available in AWS GovCloud (US-West)

The Web Search built-in server-side tool on Amazon Bedrock is now available in AWS GovCloud (US-West), helping bring grounded web results to compliance-sensitive government and public-sector workloads. Web Search helps supported OpenAI GPT models ground responses with information from the web. Responses include citations to the sources the model used so users can trace each claim back to its web origin. This can be especially valuable whenever an answer depends on information that changes over time or is more recent than a model's training data, such as current events, recent releases or live pricing. Because the tool runs inside Amazon Bedr…

AWS Lambda now supports SnapStart for container image functions

Starting today, AWS Lambda supports SnapStart for functions packaged as container images, reducing startup times from several seconds to as low as sub-second. Lambda SnapStart is an opt-in capability that makes it easier for you to build highly responsive and scalable applications without provisioning resources or implementing complex performance optimizations. Customers deploy Lambda functions with container images to align with their organization's container-based deployment standards, or to package larger dependencies up to 10 GB. However, larger container images can experience startup times of several seconds as Lambda downloads image la…

Amazon RDS for SQL Server supports additional SQL trace flags

Amazon RDS for SQL Server supports 18 additional SQL trace flags that you can enable through database parameter groups. Trace flags are configuration switches that modify SQL Server engine behavior — such as query optimizer cardinality estimation, lock escalation, statistics management, and memory handling — to allow database administrators to fine-tune performance and address workload-specific challenges. With this expansion, you have greater flexibility to optimize and stabilize your SQL Server workloads directly within your managed RDS environment. The newly supported trace flags include: 647, 652, 1448, 3654, 4138, 4139, 7745, 8285, 8780…

Kubernetes v1.37: etcd RangeStream Cuts Memory Use on Large List Reads

I am excited to announce that etcd RangeStream is graduating to beta in Kubernetes v1.37. Paired with etcd v3.7, it reduces the memory the API server and etcd need to read a large collection, and makes peak usage more predictable. The cost of large readsThe API server serves most list and watch requests from its in-memory watch cache. Populating that cache requires reading a resource's full state from etcd, at startup and on every re-initialization. For a resource with many objects, or large ones, such as Pods, that read is expensive. The API server already paginated these reads, asking etcd for a fixed number of keys at a time rather than t…
